Cross Curricular teaching
The primary curriculum offers exciting opportunities for developing children’s subject specific skills and knowledge and also important opportunities for helping children recognise the links between curriculum subjects. Emphasising links between subjects help children make sense of what they are learning. Cross curricular links are crucial to learning as learning depends on being able to make connections between prior knowledge and experiences and new information and experiences. Such connections help us make sense of our world and develop our capacity to learn. The human brain increases capacity by making connections (synapses) not merely by amassing information. DfES 2006
Planning for Cross Curricular teaching might seem a bit daunting but it can be quite straightforward with the right approach. Your lesson plan may be in the subject which best fits the theme and therefore the primary learning objective will be from that subject. Some people like to use a different font colour for the subsequent learning objectives that are from other subjects, or alternatively add an extra page to cover the learning objectives from the other curricular areas. The important thing to remember is that you are not writing a "script" for the lesson but a plan of your intentions to teach so it needs to be a manageable task.
